Derby Dashboard vs DerbyNet
DerbyNet is free, open source and very capable. Derby Dashboard trades some of that depth for a setup any volunteer can do in a few minutes. Here's how they compare.
Free for up to 20 racers. Runs in Chrome or Edge, and keeps going when the Wi-Fi doesn't.
Side by side
| Derby Dashboard | DerbyNet | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free up to 20 racers. $49 or $89 a year for larger groups and extra features | Free, with no license fees or subscriptions |
| Setup | Open the website in Chrome or Edge and sign up. Nothing to install | Run a small web server on a laptop, a Raspberry Pi or in the cloud, then connect other devices to it |
| Network on race day | None needed; one laptop runs everything offline | Devices need to reach the server over a network |
| Electronic timers | Judge by eye today. USB timer support is coming soon | Supported through its DerbyTimer program |
| Judging by eye | Built in, with tie, did-not-finish and undo | Results can be entered by hand |
| Replay | Camera replay with frame-by-frame stepping (paid plans) | Webcam instant replay after each heat |
| Screens | One or two big screens from the race laptop, plus a parents' phone page (Pack Plus) | Many displays at once: race, on deck, check-in, slideshow and awards |
| Source code | Closed source | Open source; you can change it |

Which one fits your group?
Choose DerbyNet if you have a tech-comfortable volunteer, want lots of screens and devices on a network, need an electronic timer today, or prefer free and open-source software.
Choose Derby Dashboard if your derby chair changes every year, you want to be racing within minutes of opening the laptop, you judge by eye, or you'd rather not set up a server and network in a gym.
We built Derby Dashboard after running derbies with DerbyNet, and we think it's great software. Derby Dashboard is for the volunteers who'd rather not run a server.
